NYRA Bets Presents Weekend Play At Saratoga: Alabama, Lake Placid Trifecta Keys

by | 08.17.2018 | 4:43pm

For this weekend's play, let's zero in on the two graded stakes on Saturday's card at the Spa. Neither one looks to be a “bombs away” race but they both have enough interesting contenders that perhaps we can make some money with trifecta “keys,” that is singling a horse in each of the tri slots.

Race 8, G2 Lake Placid Stakes, 1 1/8 Miles, Turf
The race favorite, #6 Rushing Fall (9-5), is a deserving one. She's a neck away from being perfect after five starts, having gotten nailed at the wire in her last race on Kentucky Oaks day. The Chad Brown trainee hasn't gone nine furlongs before, so on paper that's a question mark but probably not in reality.

Three others come out of the Belmont Oaks and all of them have a shot, including Rushing Fall's stablemate #4 Significant Form (3-1), who had to steady a bit at the top of the stretch. So did #3 Capla Temptress (6-1), who competed at the Group 1 level in France the race prior and performed very well. Impossible to toss the form of #2 Daddy Is a Legend (4-1) as well. She won the G3 Lake George last out over the Saratoga turf.

But for our trifectas, I'm going to key #1 Thewayiam (7-2). She hasn't missed the exacta in eight starts since shipping to the U.S. from France and landing in the barn of Graham Motion. Motion's having a strange meet, with zero wins from 26 starts but 11 on-the-board finishes. He might be due for a win but with this filly, ridden by John Velazquez, at the very least a trifecta finish should be hard to deny.

Race 9, G1 Alabama Stakes, 1 1/4 Miles
I don't love the idea of keying a favorite, but it's hard to see #3 Midnight Bisou (7-5) failing to hit the tri in this one. She hasn't gone 10 furlongs before, so that's an issue, but it appears she'll get a great set-up for her run, she's in excellent form, and she's hit the board in every single one of her eight races.

#8 Talk Veuve to Me (5-2) comes in ripping and snorting as well and could be sitting on huge race. She'll be involved from the start but she's also never been nine furlongs, let alone 10, so will she last the whole way? Midnight Bisou's Steve Asmussen stablemate, #4 She's a Julie (9-2), will also be on the speed but like Talk Veuve to Me, her farthest race so far has been 1 1/16 miles. Still, she fits on speed figures and form.

#2 Eskimo Kisses (6-1) has had the recent misfortune of racing against super filly Monomoy Girl in her last three starts, so I'm going to give her an outside chance to pull the upset with her come-from-behind style. There's no one in this field I would toss from hitting the bottom of the tri, especially when you're talking about 3-year-old fillies going this distance.
