NJ stallion Unbridled Jet dies from lightning strike

Unbridled Jet, a New Jersey-based son of Unbridled, died Thursday when he was struck by lightning at Sleeter Farm.  The 15-year-old was ranked third on the New Jersey sire list for 2011 and had produced eight stakes winners from eight crops of racing age.

Australia: Death toll mounting from Hendra virus

Authorities in Queensland, Australia fear a sixth horse has died from the Hendra virus.  Several farms in the region remain under quarantine, and 17 people in Queensland are undergoing tests for Hendra. Since June 20, five horses have died or been put down due to the virus.
