The infamous “TMZ horse,” Roadster, who trainer Bob Baffert identified to tabloid news website TMZ as his next big stable star back in July of 2018, could be making his way toward the Santa Anita Derby. The 3-year-old son of Quality Road won an allowance race on March 1 by 2 1/2 lengths, pleasing Baffert with a final time of 1:37.53 for the two-turn mile at Santa Anita Park.
“I was relieved that we got a good race into him,” Baffert told drf.com. “We thought we had him pretty tight. He caught another gear when he turned for home. He passed the two-turn test.”
Now, the Speedway Stable-owned Roadster is under consideration for the Santa Anita Derby. The allowance win was just his third career start, following a maiden win in late July and third-place finish in the G1 Del Mar Futurity.
