Team Valor International and WinStar Farm LLC's Gouverneur Morris' status for the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream March 28 will depend on a scheduled five-furlong workout Saturday at Palm Beach Downs, said Team Valor International's Barry Irwin on Thursday.
The Todd Pletcher-trained 3-year-old son of Constitution, who finished second in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) last year after winning by nine lengths in his debut at Saratoga, captured a Feb. 14 optional claiming allowance at Tampa Bay Downs in his 2020 debut.
“With opportunities and travel options expected to be limited, we have changed our outlook on racing him,” Irwin said. “We want to run him while there are still races available.”
Gouverneur Morris is one of nine Pletcher trainees nominated to the Florida Derby, which will highlight a program with 10 stakes, six graded, worth $2.25 million in purses.
Pletcher has won the Florida Derby a record five times, including four of the last six years. His most recent win came in 2018 with Audible.
