Two Road to the Kentucky Derby options appear to be the primary choices for undefeated 3-year-old Independence Hall's next start, trainer Michael Trombetta told horseracingnation.com on Monday. The son of Constitution, now based at Tampa Bay Downs after his win in Aqueduct's Jerome Stakes on Jan. 1, could point to either the G3 Sam F. Davis on Feb. 8 or the G2 Risen Star on Feb. 15.
“All these things are being kicked around in conversation with the owners group,” Trombetta told Horse Racing Nation. “When we get a little further down the line, we'll circulate some harder decisions.”
Independence Hall, a $100,000 yearling at the Keeneland September sale, made his debut on the Pennsylvania Derby undercard at Parx. He won by 4 3/4 lengths despite missing the break, so Trombetta entered him in the G3 Nashua at Aqueduct. This time he won by 12 1/4 lengths, easily dispatching the field. In the Jerome on New Year's Day, Independence Hall won by four lengths despite shying from the whip a few times in the stretch. Overall, the colt has won all three of his starts for earnings of $210,000.
