The original Triple Crown trophy

Chris Kay, CEO of the New York Racing Commission, believes that the trophy for a Triple Crown winner ought to be as special as the achievement it honors. So, he's commissioned a new one with artist Roberto Santo, according to bloodhorse.com.

“It's 7 1/2 inches and relatively minimalistic,” said Kay of the trophy awarded to American Pharoah's connections last year. “For something as grand as the Triple Crown—something that is so rare and hard to achieve—we should have something equally spectacular. That was my motivation.”

The new trophy will stand 36 inches high, and features a silver, three-sided based topped with a golden Thoroughbred. Santo decided not to use a particular racehorse as the model for the trophy, preferring instead that the piece remain “timeless.”

This is how cash-strapped-NYRA spends it money. On a trophy that’s won every 40 years.

Is NYRA footing the entire bill on this?? And if so why?? Shouldn’t all three tracks or companies equally share the cost??
