NBC viewers tuning in for Justify's Triple Crown victory last Saturday were touched to hear jockey Mike Smith dedicate the historic moment to injured rider Marlon St. Julien. The Daily Racing Form‘s Jay Hovdey reports St. Julien did indeed catch the moment live on television.
St. Julien told Hovdey he was just drifting off to sleep after watching the Belmont coverage when he heard Smith mention his name to NBC's Donna Barton Brothers.
St. Julien called Smith the next day to thank him, telling his fellow jockey he had struggled to remain positive during parts of his recovery from a serious fall at Prairie Meadows. Smith's thoughtful dedication at such an impactful moment gave St. Julien the encouragement he needed at just the right time.
