Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Grade I) champ Mendelssohn, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, won Friday's one-mile Patton Stakes (Listed) at Dundalk in Ireland to claim 20 points and the top spot on the new European Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard. O'Brien ran 1-2-3 in the Patton with Threeandfourpence and Seahenge finishing second and third, respectively.
The European Road to the Kentucky Derby series will climax March 30 with the Burradon Stakes at Newcastle Racecourse, in which points will increase to 30-12-6-3 for the Top 4 placings.
O'Brien's Patton top 3 also hold entries in the $2 million UAE Derby (GII) at Meydan Racecourse on March 31, which is part of the primary Road to the Kentucky Derby (Top 4 points: 100-40-20-10).
“The plan was to come here then go to Dubai and then hopefully the Kentucky Derby,” O'Brien said after the race.
At the European Road to the Kentucky Derby series' end, only one invitation to compete in the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (GI) on May 5 will be extended with preference given to the horses with the most points in the European Road to the Kentucky Derby series. No invitation will be extended beyond the Top 4 point earners but if a horse also qualifies through America's “Road to the Kentucky Derby” series, the invitation will be extended to the next eligible horse.
