McCraken returned to the worktab Tuesday morning for the first time since the G2 Toyota Blue Grass when he breezed four furlongs in 47.80 at Churchill Downs.
The Daily Racing Form reports that Churchill Downs' clocker John Nichols had out times for the colt of 1:00 for five furlongs and 1:13.40 for six furlongs.
Both trainer Ian Wilkes and jockey Brian Hernandez – who was aboard for the work – were pleased with colt.
“He worked great,” said Hernandez. “He's right back here at home at Churchill where he likes it, so we're excited for him.”
Wilkes told the Form that McCraken would work again in six or seven days, with an easier work after that.
Regarding the colt's third-place finish in the Blue Grass, Wilkes said, “I think (the Blue Grass) did a lot. “We missed the Tampa Bay Derby; we were a little fresh. He left the gates running too much. He wasn't quite relaxing to his normal routine. Got roughed up a little bit, which was good. Fitness is the big key; got that race. Everything's good there.”
