Kentucky Derby contender Avery Island was headed to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky. Tuesday after coming up lame following a workout in Florida, reports the Daily Racing Form.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin told DRF that the Street Sense colt owned by Godolphin worked “great” Friday but then came back lame. He said Dr. Larry Bramlage would evaluate the 3-year-old, who most recently won the Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct and has accumulated 14 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby standings.
Avery Island was scheduled to make his next start in the G2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds March 24.
