Mo Town, the strong winner of the G2 Remsen last November, is preparing to make his 2017 debut for trainer Anthony Dutrow. The sophomore son of Uncle Mo will be entered in the G2 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds on Feb. 25, but is also under consideration for the G3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct on March 4, according to drf.com.
With local top Kentucky Derby contender Areeb likely to sit out of the Gotham in favor of the G2 Wood Memorial a month later, the Gotham appears open for a new favorite. Breeders' Cup Juvenile third-place finisher Practical Joke could fit that bill, and trainer Chad Brown is reportedly considering both the Gotham and the G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream (on the same weekend) for the dual Grade 1-winning son of Into Mischief.
“He really worked outstanding this morning,” said Brown on Monday. “I'm still considering both races, and I'm not leaning toward one or the other.”
Dutrow's colt has been breezing at Payson Park in Florida in preparation for his next start, while Practical Joke has been in training at Palm Meadows, also in Florida.
