She's done it again. Champion Australian racemare Winx won her 24th race in a row, and in so doing, set a new world record at 17 Group 1 victories (the previous record was John Henry's 16 G1 wins, set in 1984). The daughter of Street Cry won the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday, unleashing her patented late run in the lane and doing just enough to hit the wire in front.
“I could feel the crowd erupt as we went to the front at 200 meters,” jockey Hugh Bowman told abc.net. “What a special, special horse she is and I'm just so grateful to be her jockey. Each horse is an individual, but this horse has captured the attention of the world.”
Winx has another record on her radar: Black Caviar won 25 straight races, 15 of which were Group 1s. The Chris Waller-trained Winx will aim to equal that tally in the mid-April Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes, after which she is expected to make a run at Royal Ascot.
