Australian supermare Winx captured her 28th consecutive start on Saturday, but she didn't display her customary dominant style, reported abc.net.au. Second-last at the head of the stretch, Hugh Bowman had to wait until the last possible moment to give her the cue to go. The Street Cry mare came flying to win the Group 1 Turnbull by a length over her stablemate Youngstar.
“When I peeled off her back and went out after them I thought, 'We are in for a fight' but the final 100, it was extraordinary,” Bowman said. “That'll do her good. She had to really dig deep over the final 600 metres today. That will bring her on nicely for the fourth Cox Plate hopefully in three weeks time.”
Trained by Chris Waller, Winx has now won 21 Group 1 races in her career, and a total of 30 stakes races in Australia.
