Math Wizard wins the Pennsylvania Derby

Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby winner Math Wizard could make his next start in the 2020 Pegasus World Cup, trainer Saffie Joseph told drf.com. The 3-year-old Algorithms was most recently fifth in the Breeders' Cup Classic, and in his first work since covered an easy three furlongs in :36.20 on Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

“After talking with John (Fanelli, co-owner), it's been decided that the Pegasus is in play a little bit,” Joseph told drf.com. “Obviously our main target is the Saudi Cup. But the Pegasus is here at home, it gives us an opportunity to get a race into him before Saudi and still give us plenty of time to get him ready for the next one. If all the big horses don't show up, why not?”

Math Wizard was a $25,000 claim earlier this year, and blossomed into the first Grade 1 winner for Joseph. The colt earned over $1 million this season.
