Gary West, writing for ESPN, points out that although this year's Triple Crown season produced three different winners, the series only added intrigue to the racing landscape as racegoers wait to see who this year's hero will be.
West drew up mock odds for 30 contenders he thinks could be 2013's Horse of the Year, including some names that may be surprising.
While familiar faces like Wise Dan and Game On Dude had single-digit odds, Triple Crown jewel winners Orb, Oxbow, and Palace Malice are all 20-1 to shine. Lesser-known contenders include recent stakes winning 2-year-old Kobe's Back, turf star Bright Thought, Mucho Macho Man, and injury-prone Jimmy Creed.
