West: I expect another outstanding prospect to emerge from Southwest Stakes

Gary West is high on Elite Alex both in the Paulick Derby Index and his recent column handicapping the Southwest Stakes.

“His trainer, Tim Ritchey, said Elite Alex probably should have won by 10. Having watched the race several times, I'm inclined to think the combination of the troubled start and the wide trip probably did cost the son of Afleet Alex about 10 lengths. And if he had won by 10, with a speed figure of 98, he would probably be among everybody's top five Derby candidates; moreover, he'd be 7-5 in the morning line for the Southwest instead of 4-1.”
