Waller: ‘Strong Possibility’ That Winx Will Make Two Starts In Europe In 2018

Winx takes the Cox Plate for a third time

Australian supermare Winx could make a pair of starts in Europe next year, reports The Australian. The Street Cry mare, who recently recorded a record-equaling third Cox Plate victory, had already been suggested for a tilt at Royal Ascot in June, but trainer Chris Waller told Ascot media manager Nick Smith that she could have a prep race in Europe in May.

“There is a strong possibility that Winx could run in the Lockinge over the straight mile at Newbury,” Smith said. “That will give her some practice over the straight track of the Queen Anne. The reality is the Ascot mile is a very steep ride, more like nine furlongs.”

The Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury is often considered a prep race for the Group 1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot; both are held over a straight track at a one-mile distance. Waller is expected to make a final decision about Winx's European schedule after the George Ryder Stakes in Sydney in March.

Can hardly wait… WINX racing on a straight track, she’s going to really enjoy that!

It’s uphill I read at Ascott. Do you know if that is the case in Australia? She is All Heart.

        • Lehane

There’s a slight rise at Randwick but nothing like Ascot. I believe WINX will be okay with this and will relish in the straight track rather than going around in a circle with tight turns.
As an aside, my great-great-great Irish grandmother brought out her couple of thoroughbreds to Australia and settled just out of Sydney. She raced her horses on a straight undulating track near where she lived – this was of course before Randwick was ever thought of.

Thanks for the info on the tracks. With Winx’s deadly turn of foot in the last ?500-700 meters I don’t think she will either. Her jockey is so good, always looking and keeping her where she needs to be. That’s so cool about your great……Granny! Did she bring them on a ship? It’s amazing those horses survived. I became really interested in TB history when I found out my Grandad’s TB, Dr Joe Irwin 1922, was heavily inbred to Domino on the Dam side and out of a son of Fair Play. The family shed tears when I told them his heritage. He did not have any idea, just knew a good horse in need of TLC.

Yes, came out on a ship. When i was in England i caught a boat from Harwich over to Holland and on board were some equestrian horses – their loving owners spent more time ducking down to make sure their horses were travelling okay than on deck. That’s a lovely story about your Grandad and his horse – so much kindness and caring and parting with his watch too!

Wish Tepin and Winx could’ve raced against each other. I certainly wouldn’t have wagered against either horse. In a few years, maybe some of their offspring will dual it out.

2 races then a date with Frankel or Galileo

    • Always Curious

Excellent Idea! I can’t recall if they have a sire in mind.

There are too many Grade ! races all over the world. America has its Breeders Cup, Australia has its Cox Plate and France the Arc. We need a true Grade 1 race that units all the best from around the world to see who is best. I wish a the owners of Winx, Enable and Lady Eli would put up 5 million each and run in a neutral country (say Brazil) for a winner take all race at 1 3/8 mile on turf to see who is the best turf female in the world. Too horses just stay home (like Zenyatta) and win the same race year after year after year and call themselves the best in the world. Even last year why didn’t Tepin and Lady Eli race each other? Because there are plenty of Grade 1 races that have no competition.Lets pick a date and decide this on the track!

If the Americans ran mostly on turf and dumped the drugs you would probably see better Group 1 races in America

  • Ls Gina

If indeed she tops the competition she may face in two European starts, I believe she will be elevated to a level unreachable for many future turf athletes. Heartfelt good luck wishes to her connections, and continued well wishes for !!!WINX!!!!!
