On Tuesday Sports Illustrated published its latest rendition of the “100 Greatest Moments in Sports History,” and three of racing's superstars were granted a spot on the list.
Coming in at position 99 was the Belmont Stakes of 1978, where Affirmed's rivalry with Alydar reached fever peak. The two chestnuts had finished one-two in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness that year, and Affirmed just held off Alydar by a head in the Belmont to capture the 11th Triple Crown and his place in racing history.
A long 37 years later, American Pharoah would go on to become racing's 12th Triple Crown Champion in 2015. He earned position number 35 on SI's list with his victory in the Belmont Stakes, which at 2:26.65 is the second-fastest time of any Triple Crown winner (to Secretariat).
The third and final racing superstar to garner a place on SI's list is, of course, Secretariat. His win in the 1973 Belmont Stakes goes down as the 13th greatest moment in sports history, which the gutsy colt won by a record 31 lengths in a record time of 2:24 flat, which is still untouched to this day.
