With jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. peaking behind for any competition down the stretch of Thursday night's Grade 3 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows, Whispering Oaks Farm's She's a Julie romped to the easiest of victories, winning off by 5 1/2 lengths for trainer Steve Asmussen, who 30 minutes earlier combined with Santana to win the Iowa Distaff with Dreamcall.
Under no urging from Santana in the final sixteenth of a mile, She's a Julie covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.33 and paid $8 to win as the second choice in the wagering. Cosmic Burst finished second, with Hold Her Tight third in the field of nine 3-year-old fillies. G3 Fantasy Stakes winner Sassy Sienna, the 9-5 favorite under Florent Geroux for trainer Brad Cox, was prominent early but faded to seventh.
The winner, a bay filly by Elusive Quality out of Kydd Gloves, by Dubai Millennium, was bred in Kentucky by Godolphin and sold to Whispering Oaks by Blandford Stud for $160,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Whispering Oaks is the Carenco, La., racing and breeding operation of Carrol Castille.
Santana put She's a Julie just off the pace of long shot Baydar, who set fractions of :23.17 for the opening quarter mile, :46.78 for the half and 1:11.84 for six furlongs. She's a Julie moved easily to the lead and at the top of the stretch had separated herself from the field. When she clicked off a mile split of 1:37.02 the only question would be the winning margin.
The victory was the third in eight starts for She's a Julie and first in a stakes. She was coming off a hard-fought neck victory in a one-mile allowance race at Churchill Downs on June 3. In March at the Fair Grounds, She's a Julie finished fifth, beaten three lengths by Chocolate Martini, in the G2 Fair Grounds Oaks.
