Fourteen-time winner Honey Bunny will be in search of her sixth-straight victory in Saturday's $120,000-added Roxelana Overnight Stakes but she'll have to tackle Humana Distaff (Grade I) winner Mia Mischief as well as Miss Preakness (GIII) hero Covfefe.
“This is going to be a really good test for us on Saturday,” trainer John Ortiz said. “We had an idea the race could come up pretty tough but this is going to give us an idea of how we really stack up with this type of competition. We thought about running her at Gulfstream (in the Grade II, $250,000 Princess Rooney on June 29) but I wanted to get her down there in plenty of time to get used to the track and in the end it didn't make sense. So, we'll lead her over from Trackside and see how she stacks up.”
Honey Bunny, a former $16,000 claim by Ortiz 15 months ago, scored a 1 ½-length triumph in the $100,000 Winning Colors (GIII) on May 25. The daughter of Tapizar sports an extremely consistent record of 31-14-5-4—$417.145.
The six-furlong Roxelana, named for the crack female sprinter who won seven of 11 starts and earned $264,726 between 2000-03 for trainer William “Blackie” Huffman, is carded as Race 10 of 11 on Saturday's program at Churchill Downs with a scheduled post time of 5:26 p.m. (all times Eastern). First race Saturday is 12:45 p.m.
The field for the Roxelana from the rail out (with jockey, trainer and morning line odds): Awestruck (Julien Leparoux, Rusty Arnold II, 12-1); Covfefe (Shaun Bridgmohan, Brad Cox, 7-5); Honey Bunny (Tyler Baze, Ortiz, 8-1); Ascot Day (Declan Cannon, Danny Peitz, 30-1); Astrollinthepark (Gabriel Saez, Larry Jones, 12-1); Classy Act (Adam Beschizza, Joe Sharp, 12-1); Upset Brewing (Edgar Morales, Buff Bradley, 20-1); Salt Bae (Corey Lanerie, Bernie Flint, 15-1); Annathela (James Graham, Arnold, 20-1); and Mia Mischief (Ricardo Santana Jr., Steve Asmussen, 8-5).
