Sabercat wins Delta Downs Jackpot

Delta Downs Jackpot winner Sabercat already has enough earnings to get into the Kentucky Derby field.  Now, he just needs to get his preps in.  The son of Bluegrass Cat is set to make his three-year-old debut in Saturday's Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park.  If all goes well, owner Ron Winchell says Sabercat, trained by Steve Asmussen, will head to the Arkansas Derby, then onto Louisville.

“I'm hoping in the next two starts he kind of validates himself as a real player,” Winchell tells the Daily Racing Form.  “But even if he doesn't win the next two races, we're probably going forward to the Derby, just because the way it lays out. It's such a different race. The dynamics of that race are so profoundly different. I've kind of changed my opinion of it the last five years. Horses that win sometimes aren't the obvious winners. If you've got a horse that can get the distance and qualifies, it's almost worth taking a shot.”
