Mario Verge has been involved in the racing industry in Maryland for over 18 years.
For 15 of those years, he was a jockey, one of the best on the circuit. Verge rode 2,118 winners during his time in the saddle; one of the days he looked forward to the most was Maryland Million day. He had a lot of good fortune on those days, his best year being 1998 when he had two winners on the card.
Verge has retired from the saddle, but he's still heavily involved in racing. He now works as a paddock judge on the Maryland circuit, and will once again be a part of Maryland Million day this Saturday.
“This is the best time for racing here,” Verge said. “We put on a great show.”
