Ria Antonia to Face Males in 2014 Risen Star

Ria Antonia

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Ria Antonia will be wintering at the Fair Grounds in preparation to face the boys in the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby, according to co-owner Ron Paolucci.

The Kentucky Derby could be the filly's ultimate goal for the year, according to Paolucci. If she wins the Louisiana, Ria Antonia would become just the third female in history to accomplish the feat.

Paolucci said in a recent ESPN report that he's noted several female juvenile stakes finishing faster than their equivalent open stakes, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (which was won in 1:43.52) and the Juvenile Fillies (which finished in 1:43.02). He is confident that the 32-1 Breeders' Cup longshot Ria Antonia can hold her own against next year's 3-year-old male crop.

“… that he’s noted several female juvenile stakes finishing faster than their equivalent open stakes …”

Honestly that isn’t exactly uncommon in any given year.

Fillies mature faster than the boys hence in the fall of the 2-yr old season they look often like they could be dropped into any ‘boy’ race and take a victory. They doesn’t often transfer come spring when the boys catch up. And being of a bigger size might suggest that will give an edge but it means little. I was happily drinking the Kool-Aide back in 2004 when Sweet Catomine looked to present the same case, then the SA Derby adjusted the picture.

I wish the connections well, but do take a look at prior years and see this exactly exactly a unique year. Dropping her up against the boys first time in a Grade 2 Risen Star and Louisiana Derby won’t be an easy feat.
