After a lengthy study of the photo finish, placing judges at Woodbine Racecourse declared a dead heat for the win in the G2 Dance Smartly Stakes between Lael Stables' Rainha Da Bateria and Kevin Attard/Soli Mehta's Starship Jubilee. The two mares covered 1 1/4 miles over the firm turf course in 2:02.92. Rainha Da Bateria is a 5-year-old daughter of Broken Vow, trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Javier Castellano. Starship Jubilee is a 4-year-old daughter of Indy Wind, trained by Kevin Attard and ridden by Eurico Rosa da Silva.
Belle de Nuit was out to set the pace all alone in the early going, 2 1/2 lengths in front of Starship Jubilee through fractions of :26.40, :51.05 and 1:15.66. Involuntary and Suffused were tracking in third and fourth, while Castellano had Rainha da Bateria well-placed in fifth.
Turning for home, Starship Jubilee drew even with Belle de Nuit, then quickly drew away. Rainha da Bateria was a bit slow to get going, but came with a grinding late rally to just move past Starship Jubilee at the wire. A photo finish determined that Starship Jubilee and Rainha da Bateria had hit the wire at exactly the same time, dead heating for the victory. Involuntary hung around to finish third, and Suffused got up for fourth.
Bred in Kentucky by Alexander Groves Matz, Rainha da Bateria was a $435,000 Keeneland September purchase. The mare has now won four of her 19 career starts, and earned more than $600,000.
Bred in Florida by William P. Sorren, Starship Jubilee was a $6,500 yearling at the OBS August sale. She has now won eight of her 14 career starts, earning nearly $300,000.
