The Racing Post suggests this could finally be the year a European runner wins the coveted Horse of the Year Eclipse Award. In fact, if Goldikova can win a fourth consecutive Breeders' Cup Mile, she has an outside chance to claim both the Eclipse and Europe's Cartier Award for Horse of the Year:
“… she is such an established figure in America that she ranked seventh on last week's NTRA poll for horse of the year without even running in the country, which is simply unheard of…
The Cartier award may be a tougher assignment than the Eclipse award for Goldikova this year, as the mile division is tougher than ever in Europe with Canford Cliffs and Frankel in opposition, while the middle-distance division also looks particularly strong.
From a handicapping point of view Goldikova looks unlikely to finish top of the tree for 2011, but great horses should not be judged solely on their peak performances.”
