Racing at Sam Houston Race Park was cancelled Friday night after the fifth race when a power outage briefly impacted lights at the track and jockeys refused to ride the remainder of the card.
Track president Andrea Young explained via e-mail that the neighborhood across the street from the track experienced a major power outage caused by a blown transformer. When local utility company CenterPoint re-routed power to the neighborhood, it caused two power surges that affected track lights as well as lights in surrounding areas. CenterPoint fixed the lighting issues, but a number of jockeys still refused to continue riding Friday night.
Sam Houston's Saturday card is a big night for the track, with four stakes on tap, including the Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes and the Houston Ladies' Classic.
