At 9-1, Pomeroys Pistol took the lead turning for home and held off the late run of favorite Dancinginherdreams to win the Grade 2, $200,000 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park Sunday.
With Paco Lopez on board, Pomeroys Pistol separated from the field in the stretch and hit the wire three quarters of a length in front of the hard-charging Dancinginherdreams. The final time was seven furlongs was 1.22.89.
Pomeroys Pistol is owned by Hardacre Farm and was bred in Florida by the owners. Trained by Amy Tarrant, she's a three-year-old daughter of Pomeroy out of the Point Given mare, Prettyatthetable.
Pomeroys Pistol sat just off the leader, Third Chance, down the backstretch. Second choice, R Heat Lightning, was a close fourth while Dancinginherdreams sat several lengths off the pace of 22.34 and 44.69. Rounding the far turn, Pomeroys Pistol got on even terms with the leader and started pulling away at the top of the stretch. R Heat Lightning was not making progress as Dancinginherdreams went six wide on the turn and started coming after Pomeroys Pistol. She could not get their in time. 80-1 Evil Queen finished third. R Heat Lightning was fourth.
The victory was the first win for Pomeroys Pistol since breaking her maiden last August at Monmouth Park. She was coming off a second place finish in the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream January 5. She's now two for five in her career.
Dancinginherdreams was making her third career start after two decisive victories, the most recent coming at Churchill Downs October 31. R Heat Lightning last appeared in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies November 5 at Churchill Downs, where she finished second to Awesome Feather.
