The Pizza Man To Have Time Off Before Defending Title In Arlington Million

Midwest Thoroughbreds' The Pizza Man will have a well-earned vacation before he returns to defend his title in the Grade 1 Arlington Million on Aug. 13, according to horseracingnation.com.

The 7-year-old gelding had not been training as well as he usually does, according to Midwest's Richard Papiese. The decision was made with trainer Roger Brueggemann to turn out the son of English Channel for a time before aiming for a return to the races around mid-July.

In his most recent effort, The Pizza Man was a unable to close ground late in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on Feb. 6, finishing fifth. Over the course of his career, the fan-favorite gelding has won 16 of 27 starts to earnings of over $1.9 million.
