The early favorite for this year's Kentucky Derby before he was scratched due to an entrapped epiglottis, Fox Hill Farm's Omaha Beach is nearing his return to racing. According to drf.com, the 3-year-old War Front colt breezed six furlongs at Del Mar on Monday in 1:13.60, putting him on track for the Aug. 25 Shared Belief Stakes.
“Right now, I'd say yes, it's a go,” said trainer Richard Mandella. “This was good, but we didn't want to do too much with him.”
Omaha Beach won both the Arkansas Derby and the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn en route to his pre-Derby favoritism. He was scratched the week of the Run for the Roses, and underwent surgery to repair the breathing issue. The Shared Belief would be his first start since April.
