Australian Horse of the Year Winx notched her 14th straight victory in the G2 Apollo Stakes

Australian Horse of the Year Winx returned to the racetrack a winner on Monday when she powered to a 2 3/4-length victory in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes at Randwick Racecourse.

It was the 14th consecutive victory for the 5-year-old mare by Street Cry, which matches the feat of the mighty Phar Lap.

The seven-furlong Apollo was originally scheduled to be run Saturday, but was postponed due to extreme heat. Off a step slowly in the race, Winx raced in mid-pack through the early stages of the race. She took command in the stretch, accelerating past the leaders to draw off to win convincingly.

According to Racing.com, Winx will make her next start in the G1 Chipping Norton Stakes in two weeks.

Congratulations!!! They said her next race will be Feb. 24 – the Chipping Norton Stakes also at Randwick. Poor Hartnell – Australia’s Alydar – ran his heart out to be 2nd (while Winx just loped along on the lead).

    • Lehane

Couldn’t agree more about Hartnell. He’s got what it takes but he just doesn’t seem to get comfortable. He tries so hard, love him.

  • Noelle

Racing again in two weeks! Amazing.

  • 33horses

    Amazing filly!

  • mingo

Isn’t her sire the same as Zenyatta’s? Sounds like she is following in the same footsteps.

    • Lehane

      Winx is by Street Cry.

  • whirlaway

Winx is just too special truly a lovely mare.

  • Rusty Shackelford

1:22.75 for 7F on Turf leaves a little something to be desired for a G2 race. Now with that being said 14 in a row not & easy feat but she did get it done, would like to see her in Dubai and see how she would fair with other worldly runners. If they want to acclaim her as the worldly queen then you have to run her accordingly or else she is only queen of Australia. As for her race times that’s another issue not like ARROGATE who all he does lately is set track records & what is most impressive is that he is geared down doing it. Would like to see Winx meet much more talented runners than what she has been facing. Even the Mighty Pharoah Lap ventured out of Australia to show he truly was a classy runner.

    • Lehane

It was her first start back after a spell and, as I understand it, she wasn’t going to be pushed hard. 7 races had already been run, the track was a bit cut up in parts and her jockey said that for 4 strides she was flat-footed. Who cares about the time she ran. Beautiful to watch her race, her rhythm is something else and she’s gifted with an extra gear leaving the others behind. Just adore her and pray she stays safe for the remainder of this prep.

      • Rusty Shackelford

Totally agree. I appreciate your thoughts & may she & all that race always have safe travels… No question she is beautiful to watch but she is no Phar Lap & it is a bit concerning to be comparing her to such a classy boy. Winx is good but not that good IMO.

        • Lehane

I was not comparing Phar Lap with Winx. The experts in racing were. I’m not into comparing, I prefer to look at the individual horse e.g. California Chrome. Winx is fantastic as the racing world knows and she was recently honoured along with Arrogate and Chrome and that speaks for itself.

    • Den Jay

Rusty you will go broke going on times alone. Races are run af different paces, some they go hard others are tactical and a sprint home.Track conditions contribute a lot, so you have a lot to learn about racing.Winx doesn’t have to travel anywhere to prove herself…Hartnell is rated in the top 10 in the world, Winx has met him 5 times and won everry time by a combined total of 20 lengths…Don’ t be one eyed, what is to stop people saying Arrogate needs to race outside of America and on grass to prove himself ???

      • Rusty Shackelford

Oh no, another know it all…. Sorry you have an ingrown toe nail, but if you get it removed I’ m sure your disposition will improve. Save your controlling ways for those you must bully on a daily basis because you disagree with their opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion even if it One Eyed….. F.O.

        • Den Jay

Thats’s ok Rusty, people insecure and lacking knowledge always get desperate and say things like bullying when someone with more knowledge pulls them up, sure you haven’t got 2 accounts :) Oh…F.O and cone back when you learn something ;) Also harden up a bit and don’t be a sook…

          • Rusty Shackelford

Like I said ‘KNOW IT ALL” you just one smart bloke, nothing gets by you. LMAO….

          • Den Jay

Why thank you for the compliment Rusty i appreciate you realising my talent. Also nice to see you have toughened up and not pulling the Bully card when one doesn’t agree with you. Rusty i think love you, xo

        • Den Jay

You keep shooting yourself in the foot, you say Winx has to Venture away otherwise just Queen of Australia, where has Arrogate raced until now ???

    • nancybb

Highland Reel not tough enough for you?

      • Rusty Shackelford

That’s like me telling you, TEPIN not tuff enough for you?… potato, potatoe. Not sure where your going with your comment.

        • Den Jay

Let me explain what nancybb is saying Rusty….Highland Reel wins the Secretariat , he goes to Australia and gets beaten 5.5 lengths behind Winx.Next start he goes to HK and wins the internationally respected Group 1 the Hong Kong vase, then he wins the Internationally respected King George Group 1 in England ( see how he has traveled…Aus, HK, Eng, France, America)….Then later that prep he runs 2nd in the best race in the world for class the ‘ Arc’, Then goes back and wins the Breeders Cup Turf …I hope that helps you understand…

          • Rusty Shackelford

Like I said “KNOW IT ALL” wow your just one knowledgeable character LMAO…

          • nancybb

Thanks for spelling it out. I didn’t realize that the rules of establishing form needed to be restated. I thought she ‘faired’ pretty well.

  • Rusty Shackelford

    Phar Lap

    • Den Jay

Oh he was alright but Pharoah Lap would have blown him away…

  • Leonard

Congrats to Winx on notching #14 in a row. She’ll be back in 2 weeks against the same field basically to notch #15. Too bad not going to Dubai to test the waters with other runners & really see what she is really made of.

    • Den Jay

Oh she is made of the right stuff Leonard, why would Dubai be the right meeting for her when every start has been on grass ??? It is like me saying Arrogate needs to race on grass internationally to prove himself. I find these statements a bit arrogant. Usually by far the best of them at that are the English who reckon any horse outside UK/ Ireland has to win at Royal Ascot to be counted…Not to mention the fact they have had over 100 runners and been trying to win the Melbourne Cup for over 30 years and havn’t…

      • Ida Lee

You are absolutely right…Winx has nothing to prove to anyone…she is the best …

        • Rusty Shackelford

Ida Lee “OH DO BEHAVE” Winx has already proven what she has to prove. She is the best in Australia right now, has won 14 in a row…. She is the best!! So your bit of sarcasm is out of character. Hope all is well

          • Ida Lee

Rusty, I ALWAYS BEHAVE….but who are you replying to?….check again..I’m pretty sure my comments are downright glowing when it comes to Winx…I adore mares and Winx is one of the best ever and she has nothing to prove to anyone, here or there or anywhere.

          • Carla Parrillo

I didn’t pick up on a few thing w Winx. Starting with Winx. Ifshe is 3yrs old and earns enough points can she run in the Kentucky Derby, and move into the next two races. Being from. Australia is she allowed to compete in the three prestigious races for three and under. It never occurred to me to observe this.. But do horses from other country compete in the first three races of the year for this age group

            Is

          • Ida Lee

Unfortunately, since the rules changed in 2013 when you qualify via points and not based on money earned, the fillies cannot qualify for the KY Derby. They can compete in the Preakness and Belmont but then of course unless the rules change, there will not be a filly Triple Crown winner. I’ll spare everyone a hysterical rant over the unfairness of it all. When fillies qualified, we had 3 who won the Derby, Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980 (loved her) and Winning Colors in 1988. (adored her) The last 2 fillies who ran brought us all a lot of pain…Eight Belles ran in 2007 came in 2nd to Big Brown and broke down horribly after crossing the finish line and then in 2010, the great Devil May Care came in 10th in the Derby … she died the following year of cancer.

          • Carla Parrillo

Okay, so if it’s worth her while, to return to the the states for the other two races she can compete.
In the meantime. HRN posted the horses listed for the Derby, unless it wasn’t the entire list I did not see Mcraken on it. This horse has been giving the viewers some great talent to watch. Did she get out matched by points totals? Maybe I misunderstood the report. I really thought she would be running in. I think the report, said all point totals would be in by yesterday a date?

          • Ida Lee

Carla, McCraken is currently one of the top contenders for the KY Derby …. he is undefeated and just won the Sam Davis Stakes putting him on top of the list for favorite to win the Derby this year. I’m still with Irish War Cry (a close second right now) to win the Derby. This boy has “I’m Special” written all over him…has the beauty, the speed, the distance (Curlin is his daddy)….If you want to see how a girl does the Preakness, see a replay of the 2009 Preakness won by the great Rachel Alexandra and the 2007 Belmont won by the Racing Queen to end all Racing Queens, Rags to Riches…Still considered by many, including me, as the best race ever.

          • Carla Parrillo

I am seeing where MCracken is on the list today. I think it maybhabe been the way that report was presented. I still have my eye on Irish War Cry, too. …some new names to me came on the list. I like forgive this spelling, el areej. I have caught a few of this horses races and he really can get around the track.
Even though classic empore was listed I can’t imagine that foot will be totally healed by then.
…thanks for getting back to me.

            J

          • Ida Lee

Carla, we have the best and biggest qualifying races yet to come…In Marchl, we have 50 point races starting with the Risen Star and in April, we have 100 point races like the highly contested Florida and Arkansas Derbies. My favorite all-time race is the Kentucky Derby so this is a really exciting time for horse racing fanatics like me. In my mind, Irish War Cry, as gorgeous as he is, will be a spectacular sight with a blanket of red roses on his back.

          • Carla Parrillo

Ida, in many ways ibsee we think alike. As I paid for the birthday card for Cal Chrome I couldn’t tell her why I had this from on my face. Only I knew WHO it was being mailed to!
And with the Kentuckey Darby so close we do have some excitong racing coming up.
Winx and Irish War Cry still have my attention. I have to make an effort to watch the other horses on the list too.
I read the post on Secretariat and was reminded of the race with Rags to Riches. Now I picked her/him that day. I of course liked his name and the profile let me think Thisnhorse might do this. What a surprise we got that day. So, I am watching some new ones like Spelling alert! “El ereeb” I would list a few more but.I still don’t fully understand a g1 or g2 profile.
Watching gulf stream now. One I watch is Azaar. Now a
Aqueduct is on. A horse Mission trip just ran past the gate no jockey.
I put in comments and replies to the paulick report on the Rainer/marijuana/suspended licence issue. I tried to defend this sport as much as i could. I would really appreciate your advice on my posts to them.

      • Lehane

Robert Sangster brought out Belldale Ball who won the MC many years ago. They’ve come close with others such as Red Cadeaux.

        • Den Jay

Belldale Ball was trained in Australia by Colin Hayes and close doesn’t count…

          • Lehane

But wasn’t BB brought out from the UK

          • Den Jay

Yes, Sangster sent him to Colin Hayes to train.Though the big difference is he was trained here in Australia. His prep started in shorter races and worked his way up. English trainers don’ t do that. Back then the English trainer would have tried to win the Cup with BB having not started for 3 months…

      • Leonard

I don’t know if you are new to the game but they do run grass races in Dubai. As for ARROGATE he runs on any type of track Dirt, Turf, Synthetic. He isn’t one dimensional. And in closing quit being a bully to any remarks that seem to distress you from what I’m reading here as you are going down the line & attempting to belittle those you disagree with. Get a grip of yourself Den Jay & let everyone express their opinion without having to read your very arrogant remarks about what others have to say. Learn to relax you’ll live longer hey.

        • Den Jay

Leonard , i could school you in horses…Don’t give me your whiny bully rubbish, they have grass in Dubai yes but most are non grass surface…My Father trained for years as did my brother and i. If you want to talk rubbish i will pull you up, that is not bullying…Now harden up and don’t be a sook.Unfortunely with google even amatuers like you can get the answer to questions.Where does a horse speedy cut and where does it scalp Leonard ? Where is the chestnut located on a horse ? That should kerp you googling for a few minutes as i suspect until you google leonard you won’t know if a girth or surcingle is fitted first :)

  • Ida Lee

Congratulations gorgeous one ….love those mares….Winx has it all….the looks, the talent and if she could talk, that incredibly sexy Australian accent ….

    • Den Jay

Oh stop it Ida, you are making me blush…😗

    • Carla Parrillo

The first time I caught the Australian race tracks the one thing that stood out for me as I mentioned was the size of their race horses,, and their physical stature. I don’t think I saw one that morning with matchstick legs.. The legs appeared sturde and muscular from top to bottom. Then their size phew! If Minx is 16+ hands and considered average I have to ask what the size of the other horses are.

      • Lehane

Winx is not 16+ hands, she’s about 16 hands which means she’s probably 15.9 thereabouts.

    • Carla Parrillo

We have some nice choices between us. …and yet. We seem to agree, and I think we are both becoming drawn to Minx.

  • Carla Parrillo

I have been hearing about Winx, and caught a couple of reports. O lost almost be week of catching races due to a personal loss of a family friend. But I caught a few photos and is quick video. I must say she is a very large very impressive horse. One photo shows her running with all four legs above the ground and stretched out making her body to appear even more massive. If I recall, Secretariat ran like this. He stretched, without effor, those legs out and practically flew over the track.
My first view of Australian races caught my attention because of the horses appearances. Their sizes and Large, muscular, and healthy bodies.

    • Lehane

Carla, when a racehorse is galloping there is a point in each stride, albeit a split second, when all 4 feet are off the ground. Winx is not a large horse. She might’ve seemed that way to you because she stretches out beautifully.

      • Carla Parrillo

I’m sure this is why she looked so large. I envy the photographer’s with the perfect timing to catch a shot in action like this. You mentioned that stretch or wide stride like this could hurt them. Would that be from the impact on their legs. I do think when the horses are moving in this way this is when they described as graceful giants. The race starts to look like a dance.

    • Ida Lee

If you want to see a really, really big mare with all 4 legs off the ground, check Zenyatta who at 7.2 hands is massive….I think that’s the same as Dortmund, the gorgeous giant. Now, stride per stride, research has shown that the average horse’s stride is 23.2; Zenyatta’s was 25.4 which means that Secretariat’s 25.2 was a bit shorter than Zenyatta; on the other hand, Big Red was 16.2 hands as opposed to Zen’s 17.2. It’s not just the stride but it can’t hurt.

      • mingo

Zenyatta and Winx are out of the same sire, Street Cry. Would like know how they compare “size-wise.”

        • Ida Lee

I’ve been researching trying to find Winx’s size but I can’t find it..what I did find were some really nice photos …and this girl is not only super talented and adored in Australia but she is a stunner in the looks department. She looks like a big husky girl but I’m sure she’s not as big as Zenyatta’s 17.2 hands. First…Black Caviar …. Now….Wink …. great going Australia…

          • Lehane

            Winx’s stable says she’s about 16 hands.

          • Ida Lee

Thank you … so same daddy but Zenyatta is indeed a “freak of nature”…

  • Carla Parrillo

Just thought I would share info to my fellow commenters Saturday February 18 is CALIFORNIA CHROME’S birthday. Taylor Ranch is encouraging fans to send Birthday cards. Facebook has a section in today’s California Chrome post. And added the mailing address for Chrome.

  • Vancouver Derek

Winx is the best horse in world at this moment. No question.
