Alex G. Campbell, Jr.'s homebred Mean Mary put on a show in Saturday's Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes at Gulfstream Park, grabbing the lead at the start of the 1 1/2-mile contest and pulling away toward the wire to win by five lengths. The 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy, ridden by Luis Saez for trainer Graham Motion, stopped the clock in 2:28.36 over the firm turf. The La Prevoyante was Mean Mary's first try in stakes company.
“Luis (Saez) came into the paddock and he said he was going to ask her away from the gate,” Motion said. “I said, 'Luis, you're not going to have to ask her, she's going to be on the lead.' He did a beautiful job and he slowed it right down. When they went :17, I was feeling pretty good because I didn't think the distance would be a problem.”
Leading with just over a length's advantage through all three turns over Gulfstream's turf, Mean Mary set fractions of :25.48, :51.60, and 1:17.34 en route to her runaway victory. The 6-5 favorite Lady Paname tried to threaten at the top of the stretch but had to settle for second, followed by Touriga, Raining Lemons and War Cabinet.
“The plan was to break and I know we have the speed,” said Saez. “She just broke by herself right there and she was comfortable. When we came to the stretch she just put them away. She just took off.
“I look behind me at the three-eighths [pole] and there were two or three guys I saw right there and I still felt comfortable because I had a lot of horse. I knew she was going to take off when I came to the stretch. She switched leads and she made it look easy.”
Bred in Kentucky by her owner, Mean Mary is a second-generation homebred out of the Grade 1-winning Dynaformer mare Karlovy Vary. The filly broke her maiden at second asking, and added an allowance win in her fourth career start. Mean Mary's record now stands at three wins from five starts for earnings of over $200,000.
