Jet Black Magic and Roberto Morales teamed up to score a surprise victory over heavily-favored La Appassionata in the Grade III Delta Downs Princess. The 2-year-old Hold Me Back (by Giant's Causeway) filly made a sweeping outside move on the far turn to win the $400,000 race by an expanding 4 1/4 lengths in final time of 1:42.14 for the mile over a track rated muddy.
Early leader Shesthewinner dueled with Angelita through early fractions of :24.02 and :49.60, with Jet Black Magic biding her time at the back of a compact field. La Appassionata hovered closer to the pace in third under jockey Gerard Melancon. Nearing the center of the turn, La Appassionata took a brief lead only to be passed by the rapidly closing Jet Black Magic. La Appassionata hung on for second, with Above Fashion finishing 7 1/4 lengths back in third.
Jet Black Magic was bred in Louisiana by Clear Creek Stud, LLC and trained by Bret Calhoun. She is owned by Carl R Moore Management, LLC. Today marked the filly's first graded stakes win and only her second lifetime win, following a third-place effort in the My Trust Cat prep race, to La Appassionata.
A stewards inquiry was posted into an incident in the turn around the quarter pole in which Shesthewinner drifted in toward Angelita, causing the latter to take up sharply. The stewards disqualified Shesthewinner from her fourth-place finish to behind Angelita in sixth. This change moved Learning Curve into the fourth spot.
