Lady of Shamrock took command in the stretch and drew off to easily win the $150,000 Providencia Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita Park April 7. The victory provided jockey Mike Smith with his 4,999th career victory.
Patiently ridden by Smith, the 3-year-old daughter by Scat Daddy out of Blushing Issue, by Blushing John was settled at the rear of the field throughout the early stages of the race, as Killer Graces shot to the front to set the pace. Killer Graces was soon joined by longshot Ms Pianist, with Charm the Maker just off them in third.
As the field cleared the clubhouse turn and entered the backstretch, Charm the Maker cruised to the front under Joe Talamo, who was content to let his filly gallop along on the lead. Lady of Shamrock continued to bring up the rear, with Smith content to make his move late in the race.
Charm the Maker continued to lead as the field hit the top of the homestretch. Lady of Shamrock was swiftly making up ground as she skimmed along the rail, passing tiring horses with just over a furlong to run. In mid stretch Lady of Shamrock shot to the front, and began to pull away, crossing the wire 2 3/4-lengths in front.
Byrama got up for second, a half-length in front of Killer Graces. Final time for the nine-furlong turf contest was 1:46.80 over a course rated as firm.
Lady of Shamrock is trained by John Sadler for owner Hronis Racing LLC. The dark bay or brown filly was bred in Kentucky by Grovendale Sales.
