Off her monster performance at Royal Ascot against the best grass sprinters in the world, Stonestreet Stables' 3-year-old filly Lady Aurelia has earned honors as Fasig-Tipton Turf Horse of the Month for June on the all-things grass-racing website TurfTalk360.com.
In mastering the best turf sprinters in the world to take the Group 1 King's Stand by three lengths on June 20, Lady Aurelia won at Royal Ascot for the second year, having captured the Group 2 Queen Mary by seven lengths in her second lifetime start. Lady Aurelia's time of 57.45 seconds for five-eighths of a mile against older males in the King's Stand was just 0.01 seconds off the Ascot course record.
Though stabled in Kentucky, Lady Aurelia has raced only twice in the United States, winning her debut last year at trainer Wesley Ward's Keeneland base and then also starting off 2017 with victory in Keeneland's Giant Causeway Stakes. Her other four starts have all been in England or France,
The daughter of the late Scat Daddy also won France's biggest race for 2-year-olds last summer, taking the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville. Her only defeat in six lifetime starts was third in last fall's Cheveley Park (G1) at Newmarket in England.
“It comes down to fast horses,” Ward said after Lady Aurelia gave him his eighth Royal Ascot win. “She's a once-in-a-lifetime horse.”
Ward is pointing Lady Aurelia for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar, indicating that the superstar filly could prep in York's Coolmore Nunthorpe, also a Group 1 race.
The Turf Horse of the Month award recognizes outstanding grass performers and is sponsored by the internationally prominent Fasig-Tipton sales company, which this Sept. 10 will stage its first Turf Showcase auction consisting of selected yearlings suited for grass racing at its Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky.
