Although jockey Martin Garcia rode at Del Mar over the weekend, his agent tells the Daily Racing Form Garcia is leaving Southern California to ride in the Midwest, starting Wednesday at Churchill Downs.
Agent Jay Fedor told DRF Garcia, 35, will also ride at Turfway Park and then at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas, beginning in late January.
The move could be an attempt to jumpstart Garcia's career, which has tailed off somewhat in the last couple of years. His last major graded stakes win came in 2017, aboard Collected in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic. Other career highlights include the G1 Santa Anita Derby with Dortmund in 2015, the Breeders' Cup Classic aboard Bayern in 2014 and the Preakness Stakes on Lookin at Lucky in 2010.
This year, Garcia has 41 wins from 285 starts for earnings just above $2 million. In his career, Garcia has more than 1,500 victories from 10,160 starts with an earnings total that tops $86 million. The Mexico native first began riding in the U.S. in 2005.
