J P's Gusto's win in the $400,000 Red Legend Stakes at Charles Town Saturday may have provided his ticket to the Grade 1 King's Bishop at Saratoga in August, writes Tom LaMarra in the Blood-Horse.
“We knew what kind of horse he is,” (trainer Mike Hushion's assistant Juan) Vazquez said. “He has got speed, and we knew he could handle it on this racetrack.”
J P's Gusto, on the Triple Crown trail after a series of strong efforts in California as a 2-year-old, finished second in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park but failed to make an impact in subsequent races.
