Itsmyluckyday made a three-wide move for the lead before opening a daylight advantage in the lane and reporting home a geared down length and a half winner of the Grade 3 Salvator Mile.
Dispatched the 6-5 favorite in the field of nine, Itsmyluckyday and jockey Paco Lopez went the distance over a fast main track in 1:34 4/5 and returned $4.40, $3.40 and $2.60. Bradester, the early pacesetter, completed the $35.40 exacta and paid $6.80 and $4.40. It was another nose back to Valid, who paid $4.20 to show.
“This was another test,” said winning trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., “and he passed with an A+. He was three-wide around the entire turn and still managed to kick away in the lane. He kind of pulled himself up in the end.
“He'll be back for the Monmouth Cup (Grade 2, $200,000, 1 1/8 miles here on July 27), barring anything unforeseen.”
Racing in the colors of Triology Stable and Laurie Plesa, Itsmyluckyday is a 4-year colt by Lawyer Ron from the Doneraile Court mare Viva La Slew. The $90,000 winner's share of the purse pushed his lifetime earnings to $1,022,600 from a record of eight wins from 17 career outings.
