Irish Jasper takes the Miss Preakness Stakes

Derek Ryan's Irish Jasper surged up the inside under jockey Kendrick Carmouche to capture her first graded stakes in the Grade 3, $150,000 Adena Springs Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course Friday.

Sitting well off a hot pace contested by Windy Forecast and Super Saks, Irish Jasper made a bid from mid-pack at the top of the stretch to win going away, running six furlongs in 1:10.76. Huasca and Coco's Wildcat filled out the trifecta.

Also trained by Ryan, Irish Jasper has won five of her eight lifetime starts. In her only previous start at Pimlico, she was fourth in the Stormy Blue Stakes April 18.

Bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Courtney, Jr., Irish Jasper is by Juddmonte Farm's First Defence out of Irish Connection (Mr. Greeley). Consigned by Stonebridge to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Sale in October 2013, she sold for $12,000.
