Millionaire and Southern California fan-favorite Ashleyluvssugar has officially been retired, trainer Peter Eurton reported on Twitter Sunday. The 9-year-old gelding finished sixth in Saturday's G3 San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
“For me, I'll miss his enormous personality – playful still at 9, his tenacity & the way he looks at you with those big eyes,” Eurton wrote. “He can't be replaced, but I know he'll have a lot of fun in retirement hanging with our fellow OTTB Betty's Bambino.”
Ashleyluvssugar retires with a record of 10 wins, six seconds and six thirds from 38 lifetime starts. He won graded stakes in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and placed in graded company in 2018 and 2019. The California-bred son of Game Plan earned $1,488,083.
He was named by Ashley Capece, 16-year-old granddaughter to Bran Jam Stable owner Mike Mellen. The gelding is out of 2015 California Broodmare of the Year Ashley's Folly, “nd the “Sugar” part of his name refers to a family dog.
