War Corresondent, a 7-year-old son of War Front who began his career in France, scored his second U.S. graded stakes victory on Saturday as the 3-5 favorite in the Grade 3 Miami Mile at Gulfstream Park. Under Tyler Gaffalione, the Christophe Clement trainee came from just off the pace to defeat longshot front-runner Applicator by one length, with Lubash a nose behind the runner-up in third and Our Way last in the compact field of four turf runners.
Time for the one mile on firm turf was 1:34.19.
Gaffalione sent War Correspondent to the front out of the gate, but M.A. Kappushev pushed Applicator to seize command as the quartet rounded the clubhouse turn, the opening quarter mile in :24.27.
Applicator maintained an unchallenged lead from War Correspondent down the backstretch, the half mile in :48.69, but Gaffalione moved up to tackle the pacesetter on the far turn. After three quarters in 1:23.11, War Correspondent poked his head in front at the top of the stretch and was aggressively hand ridden to the wire. Applicator just lasted for second over a fast-closing Lubash, also from the Clement barn.
“It was a perfect trip,” said Clement assistant trainer Thomas Brandebourger. “He's a very genuine horse. He's going to give you everything. When he's right he is a very good horse. [Lubash] ran well. He had the pace against him. It was a slow pace and he had to make up ground. He just got beat for second place [by Applicator], but he ran well.”
Bred in Kentucky by Joseph Allen, War Correspondent races for the partnership of Calumet Farm, Sagamore Farm and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. War Correspondent was produced from the Gone West mare Tempo, dam of G1 Belmont Stakes and leading young sire Union Rags.
The win was the third in the U.S. and fifth overall from 14 starts for War Correspondent, who previously won the G3 Appleton Stakes in 2015.
