Paradise Woods has six filly and mare rivals Sunday in the Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar

Dual Grade 1 winner Paradise Woods made her debut for new trainer John Shirreffs on Saturday, finishing fifth and last in the G2 Santa Monica Stakes at odds of 5-1.

“It was hard to reach any conclusions,” Shirreffs told drf.com. “She didn't break running and rushed up a little and got boxed in. That's not her style.”

Paradise Woods finished 8 3/4 lengths behind odds-on favorite Marley's Freedom. It was the 5-year-old daughter of Union Rags' first start since July of 2018, when she was trained by Richard Mandella.

Shirreffs had been pleased with the mare's training leading up to the Santa Monica, and said a potential next start could come in the G1 Beholder Mile on March 16.
