In the 68th running of the Metropolitan Jets Oceanport Stakes on Sunday at Monmouth Park, Michael J. Bruder's Guys Reward burst out of the pack in midstretch and went on to a one-length victory over Fredericksburg, who had set all the pace.
Guys Reward, trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Paco Lopez, raced the mile and a sixteenth in 1:40 2/5 on firm turf and paid $11.20, $4.80 and $3.20 across the board. Fredericksburg completed the $73.60 exacta and paid $6.60 and $4.80. Under Control was third, less than a length farther back and returned $8.40 to show.
This was the second stakes score of the year for Guys Reward, a 7-year-old son of Grand Reward. He earned $90,000 to kick his career bankroll to $777,709.
“I thought he was waiting a little closer than he usually does,” Romans said. “But it looked like he needed to. He's just a good, old hard campaigner. When the horse is right, he gives you his all, and he did that today.”
