James Spence's Aubby K, winner of the G1 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs in May, has been retired after fracturing a sesamoid during a routine workout Monday.
The daughter of Street Sense was being pointed to the G1 Ballerina Stakes by trainer Ralph Nicks. Aubby K retired with a record of four wins from nine starts, with earnings of $435,004.
Nicks told the Daily Racing Form that the injury occurred as she was being pulled up by Edgar Prado, who piloted her during her workout.
“She was pulling up after the work when Edgar said he heard something pop,” Nicks told the DRF. “She broke the base of her sesamoid off. It happened after she completed the work. He almost had her pulled up when it happened.”
Plans had called for Aubby K to run through the end of the year, before being either sold or bred.
