Gift Box, who worked four furlongs Friday in 49.20, “might stay here” for the Grade I, $600,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 7, trainer John Sadler said Saturday morning.
The 6-year-old gray son of Twirling Candy won the Big 'Cap by a nose last April but also has been listed as under consideration for the Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25, the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 29 and the $12 million Dubai World Cup on March 28.
Gift Box burst onto the older horse handicap scene in late 2018 with a win in the G2 San Antonio, after which he defeated McKinzie by a nose in the Big 'Cap. The horse then ran second in the G1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita, followed by a fourth in the G2 Stephen Foster at Churchill. After six months away from the races, Gift Box returned to repeat in the G2 San Antonio last month.
Overall, the horse has a record of 6-6-2 from 18 starts for earnings of $1,127,060.
