Firing Line, winner of the G3 Sunland Derby and 2015 Kentucky Derby runner-up, has been taken out of training after being diagnosed with an illness.
The Daily Racing Form reports that the 4-year-old son of Line of David underwent a thorough exam after a dull fifth-place finish in an optional claiming race July 9 at Santa Anita. That race marked the first start for Firing Line in over a year. The Simon Callaghan trainee underwent surgery to have a bone chip removed from an ankle last summer.
Callaghan told the DRF that Firing Line was scoped on Saturday after the race, and he was found to have a “considerable amount” of mucus in his lungs.
“He had a lot of mucus down there and that seems why he ran a dull race,” Callaghan said. “He's on some antibiotics. We'll make sure we get that cleared up before we do anything.”
