Favorite Evening Jewel didn't disappoint Saturday at Santa Anita Park as she surged home to take the $300,000, 1 1/16 mile Sunshine Millions Distaff.
Under Victor Espinoza, Evening Jewel hooked to the outside at the top of the stretch and ran down the leaders to win by half a length in 1:42.25.
Evening Jewel is owned by the Braly Family Trust and was bred in California by Betty and Larry Mabee. Trained by James Cassidy, she's a four-year-old daughter of Northern Afleet out of the Giant's Causeway mare, Jewel Of The Night.
Briecat set the pace through fractions of 23.30, 47.50 and 1:11.47, tracked by Amazing. Evening Jewel sat several lengths back but rounding the far turn, she started coming after the leaders and took the upper hand in deep stretch over Amazing, who put in a game performance to win a photo for second over the late-running Ultra Blend.
Evening Jewel was coming off three straight defeats in graded stakes company. Prior to that, she had won three graded stakes in a row.
