Eight Rings, Nucky, the upset winner of the Grade I Del Mar Futurity Sept. 2 and impressive Los Alamitos debut winner Mo Hawk are among 80 2-year-olds nominated to the $200,000-guaranteed Los Alamitos Futurity.
A Grade II at 1 1/16 miles, the Futurity and the Starlet, a Grade I for 2-year-old fillies at the same distance, highlight the upcoming Winter meet at Los Alamitos, which begins Thursday, Dec. 5 and continues through Sunday, Dec. 15.
Both the Futurity and Starlet will be run Saturday, Dec. 7.
Included among the 57 nominated to the Starlet are Bast, who romped in the Grade I Del Mar Debutante Aug. 31, the undefeated Been Studying Her and impressive first out winner Immediate Impact.
Besides Eight Rings, who unseated jockey Drayden Van Dyke shortly after the start of the Del Mar Futurity when heavily-favored, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Futurity all five years it has been run at Los Alamitos (2014-2018), nominated 25 other juveniles.
Baffert, who won the Futurity six times at Hollywood Park before its closure in 2013, has captured the race locally with Dortmund (2014), Mor Spirit (2015), Mastery (2016), McKinzie (2017) and Improbable last Dec. 8.
Winners of the Starlet since the race moved from Hollywood Park to Los Alamitos include Take Charge Brandi (2014), Street Fancy (2015), Abel Tasman (2016), Dream Tree (2017) and Chasing Yesterday (2018).
