Dual Classic Champion Winter Finished For Season; No Decision Yet On 2018

The grey filly Winter outlasts Blond Me (black cap) and Sobetsu (royal blue) to win the G1 Nassau Stakes

Coolmore's dual classic winner Winter will not race again this season, it was announced early Thursday.

According to Sporting Life, a decision on whether Winter will remain in training next year or be retired will be made at a later date.

A daughter of Galileo, Winter had a banner sophomore season, winning both the G1 British and Irish 1,000 Guineas, the G1 Coronation Stakes and G1 Nassau Stakes. She was also second in the G1 Matron.

“She hasn't been 100 per cent since the Arc,” trainer Aidan O'Brien told Press Association Sport.

“She hadn't done much since then and that's why she was taken out (of the Ascot races – British Champions day). She won't run again this year and whether she stays in training will have to be discussed.”

The lovely Winter is trying to send a message here….wants to give Galileo some grand-babies….

Because she’s tired after her longest race ever at the end of a long year where she gave a lot of big efforts? I would be shocked if she wasn’t.

Give her the Winter (ha) off and bring her back in spring, see how she goes. Her dam got better with age. They can always breed her if she’s not training well.

I’m not surprised that Winter needs a rest but I’m willing to bet a couple of bucks that this very talented mare will not be back to racing next year….and if she does return, I promise not to get my nose out of joint when you remind me with a “told you so” …..

Unfortunately I think you’re probably correct. She has accomplished a lot and it doesn’t make a ton of economic sense for them to run her against their males or bring back all four of their star 3yo fillies to keep beating each other with next year’s three year olds on the way; they were sporting to bring back Found to run against their top males but if they hadn’t Highland Reel would be an Arc winner.
