The field for this year's $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot (Gr. III) was finalized on Wednesday morning as entries were taken and post positions drawn for the 1 1/16-mile test for 2-year-olds, which will take place Saturday at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. There is a special first post time for the Jackpot Day program of 1:15 p.m. CST.
The $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot has become a major stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby each year as the coveted $600,000 first-place paycheck all but assures the winner of a spot in the starting for the 'Run for the Roses'. A total of five horses have made the journey from the Jackpot to the Kentucky Derby since the race's inception in 2002. The best finish was recorded by Closing Argument, who finished second to Giacomo in 2005.
A full field of 10 horses will take part in this year's $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot race. The 2-1 morning line favorite for the big event is Grade I, Del Mar Futurity winner Drill, who will break from post 6 under jockey Martin Garcia for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
