Drawing Away Stable's 23-1 shot Doctor J Dub was the surprise winner of Monday's G3 Turf Monster Stakes, holding on by a half-length on the wire. The 6-year-old son of Sharp Humor covered five furlongs over Parx's firm turf in :58.73 under Sheldon Russell for Jena Antonucci.
Doctor J Dub jumped out of the gates with the lead, speeding through a first quarter in :22 3/5. Russell cued him earlier than did the other jockeys, about a sixteenth before turning for home, giving Doctor J Dub a two-length lead at the head of the lane. Two Notch Road was closing well but could only get to within a half length of Doctor J Dub at the wire. Pool Winner was third.
Bred in New York by Dr. Patricia S. Purdy, Edwin Edelberg and Mara Edelberg, Doctor J Dub was a $195,000 OBS 2-year-old in training purchase to Dale Romans in 2012. He improved his overall record to 6-6-5 from 25 starts, with earnings of over $300,000.
